Chapter 8 Crystal City

They exited the spire and returned to the main courtyard where all their living companions stood around a fire with food found within the city.

As they approached, Kealin noticed Jesia had a strange vial that she was holding to the light of the fire. It was a black substance and very thick from what he could tell as she rolled it in her hands.

“What did you find?” he asked her.

“I’m not too sure,” she replied.

Alri glanced over and then laughed, “Careful with that,” she said. “That is an elixir that will greatly augment your arcane powers. It is used most commonly to increase an enchantment spell when forging weapons, however, if used in battle, you, Rusis, would become a near unstoppable force as long as the elixir lasted. But be warned that the pull on your body would be so severe you could not hope to remain strong enough to fight after its consumption. I would not take that unless our stance in battle looked very grim.”

“And we only win,” Ruak shouted, “So you won’t be needing that!”

Kealin looked up to the overbearing dark clouds flowing over them like a storm at sea. But there was no rain. Only a cold, overbearing feeling that chased all sense of warmth away.

“It is starting to feel like my home around here,” Brethor said.

“You are from the Far North, a snow dwarf place, right?” Ruak asked.

“I am. I sent word to my father that I was alive and would come to him in time. That is my intent, at least. You are all welcome, of course.”

Jesia smiled. “If we survive this.”

“You will,” Alri said. “My minions will pave our road into Ridda. I want us to stay back until the city is breached. Once we are inside, their forces will be no stronger than what we faced here, except for Aganim. I will face him with Kealin. He is powerful, and I wish not to risk you all.”

“Come now, Priestess,” Ruak said. “We faced Vakron-Tur.”

“He was weak compared to the blood priest. This is the literal head of the opposing magic to my own.”

She stomped past them, thrusting her staff into the air, sending a white blast into the sky. “We leave this city. May the desert forever cover this place in time. We move north and, the gods willing, will have victory by sunrise.”

Several undead minions brought the horses to the companions.

Suvasel appeared before her.

“I have forwarded your commands. The Dread Army assembles and waits for your orders on the northern dunes.”

“Our numbers?”

“We near a half-million strong. Servants have been pouring into our ranks from all over the dunes. We now have a large contingent of skeletal warriors, as well as some of what I could describe as mummified corpses.”

“An ancient practice meant to help them reach the afterlife. This is their afterlife. I hope they enjoy it.”

She smiled, and Suvasel bowed.

“I return to the others. I will have you know that even the weakest of our lines have fallen into form as the others.
